Understand your installation

Electrical information.
Without the guesswork.

A practical guide to the systems in your property, the signs worth noticing and the information to share with an electrician.

01 / CIRCUIT PROTECTION

Why does the power trip?

A protective device disconnects a circuit when it detects the type of fault it is designed to respond to. Tripping can relate to an appliance, damaged wiring, moisture or too much load on a circuit.

Repeated tripping needs investigation. A trip alone does not identify the cause, and replacing a device without assessing the circuit may leave the problem unresolved.

Useful details to share
Which device trips, what was being used and whether the issue affects one room or several.
02 / RCD PROTECTION

What does an RCD do?

A residual current device (RCD) monitors for an imbalance in electrical current and disconnects the supply when the imbalance exceeds its operating threshold. It provides additional protection against certain electric shock risks.

Its presence does not mean every circuit is protected or that the whole installation is in good condition. An electrician can assess the arrangement and carry out appropriate testing.

Keep in mind
An RCD is an additional safeguard. It does not make damaged electrical equipment safe to use.
03 / INSPECTION & TESTING

What is an EICR?

An Electrical Installation Condition Report records the findings of an inspection and testing of an existing installation. It helps identify deterioration, defects and safety concerns within the agreed scope.

It is different from a certificate for newly installed electrical work. Inspection limitations and any observations should be explained so you understand the findings and recommended next steps.

Before you enquire
Have your property type, previous report if available and reason for the inspection ready.
04 / CONSUMER UNITS

More than a fuse box replacement.

The consumer unit distributes electricity to your circuits and houses their protective devices. An upgrade needs to consider the connected wiring, earthing, bonding and suitability of circuit protection.

The appearance or age of a unit alone cannot establish the condition of the installation. Assessment helps determine whether replacement, repairs or further investigation are appropriate.

Discuss the complete job
Ask about assessment, testing, certification and any additional work identified.
Recognise the warning signs

Some problems need prompt attention.

Scorch marks, a burning smell, visible damage or signs of water around electrical equipment are reasons to seek professional advice. Keep clear of exposed wiring and affected equipment. Do not touch wet electrical fittings or remove covers.

If there is fire or immediate danger, call 999. For other concerns, call to discuss the issue and check appointment availability.

  • Burn marks or discolouration
  • Repeated circuit tripping
  • Water in or around electrical fittings
  • Cracked sockets or damaged cables

Plan the right electrical work

Make your project easier to assess.

LIGHTING /

Choose lighting for its location.

Consider how the room is used, brightness, switching positions and whether dimming is needed. Bathrooms and outdoor spaces need equipment suited to the environment and location.

POWER /

Think beyond extra sockets.

Share which appliances or equipment you plan to use. Additional sockets do not increase a circuit’s capacity; the existing installation must be considered when planning changes.

WIRING /

Plan before decorating.

For renovations, provide the room layout, proposed appliance positions and timing. Wiring routes, access and reinstatement arrangements should be discussed before work starts.
